My grandfather died in 1994 when I was 14. I was very close to him growing up. I would spend hours upon end in the garage with him, building things, fixing things, and just tinkering. He was a very active man all the way up until he passed. A month before he died he had painted the entire exterior of his house by himself. He was 78.
After he died I moved in with my grandmother so she wouldn't be alone. I already had my own room in the house anyway. I was very close to them and practically grew up in that house. Also, I was going through a difficult phase where my mother and I hardly got along. All in all it was for the best.
Well as the years went by the house fell into disrepair. I was pretty handy around the house for a teenage girl, but there were still limits to the amount of repairs I could do.
Eventually I had to move back in with my mother as the result of an argument between her and my grandmother.. long story. Anyway, months later I had a dream while I was living with my mother.
In the dream, I was walking down the hallway towards my room which was at the end of the hall. If the door was open you could see right out of the window because it was lined up with the door and hall. In the window was my grandfather. He was outside standing on a ladder looking in at me and beckoning to me.
When I got to him he told me that he needed the rubber mallet downstairs (in the basement) on his workbench. He was doing some type of repair on the outside of the window frame.
So I ran back down the hall and into the basement. As I was retrieving the mallet, in my dream I began to realize that this could not be possible because my grandfather was dead. Don't dreams like that stink?
I ran back upstairs and down the hall but I could not see him in the window any longer. I began to cry and actually woke up still crying.
A couple of days later I was talking to my grandma on the phone when she told me something quite shocking.
She said that she had heard some banging outside and went to investigate. The frame of the window was hanging off and needed to be nailed back on. The wind was bumping the loose part against the house. She asked me to come over when I had a chance and nail it back into place.
I was floored! Grampy had come to me in a dream to let me know that there were some repairs to be done. It still chokes me up when I think about it.
Before I knew it I was on the step ladder with mallet in-hand repairing the window frame.
He was a handyman until the very end... and then some!
