In 1973 when I was 2 years old I moved to Lincoln Neb. from Reno, Nev. We moved into some apartments that I believe were called the Berkshire Apts. however, I believe the name has been changed since then. The address of the apartments was either 1200 Berkshire Court or 2000 Berkshire Court. They were located about 2 miles north of gateway mall for anyone familiar with Linclon.
Anyway, this story starts when I was about 5 years old. Up until then, I had always gone to bed rather early as little kids do, but for some reason, whether it be that I couldnt sleep or that my parents let me stay up later, I was occasionally up at around midnight. The earliest memory I have of it is one evening I was sitting in the living room with my parents as they were watching TV. It was late, my sister was already asleep in our room (the two of us shared a room) when I heard a series of knocks on the patio window. My father who also had heard them, got up to go check and found nothing. So much for that incident. However, for the next 1 1/2 or 2 years roughly, anytime I was up late, I would hear these knocks on the windows.
Since I was still a young kid, I had to be in bed by a certain time every evening. But as I said earlier, there were times when I was still up late. I would say, that during the next 2 years after that first incident, I was up late maybe 25-30 times, and each and every time, I would hear the knocks. Generally our bed time was around 9, and if I went to bed then, I would usually be asleep by 9:30 or 10:00. But, I knew that if I was unable to go to sleep by 12:00 I would hear the knocks. I am not sure what time the knocks occored at, however, I do know that they happened after 11:00 every night since that was the time my parents generally went to bed, and most of the memories I have of this, my parents are already asleep.
While I vaguely recall many of the instances, there are several that seem as if they happened just yesterday.
One time, I was up with my mom, my father was out of town on business, and we both heard knocks on the patio window. Once again, my mom checked and there was nothing there. These two times are the only times my parents actually heard the knocks. Or at least that I am aware of.
Another time, my parents were putting me to bed. It was late as we had been out for dinner that evening. My sister was in the living room watching TV when I heard knocks on our bedroom window. These knocks were rather soft, and for some reason, my parents didn't hear them, it could be because they were talking, or maybe they weren't listening for them as I was. Anyway, my sister came into the room and said that she just heard knocks on the patio window. This occured well into the 2 year period, and I had been aware that the knocks went from the Patio window first, to our bedroom window, and then to my parents window. While I had mentioned the knocks to my sister many times, this is the only time I recall her hearing them too. My father checked the patio window, and found nothing. I didn't tell my parents about the knocks in the bedroom, as I was use to it.
The most vivid of experiences occured one night when I was unable to get to sleep. It was getting later and later, and I knew that soon I would hear something. Everybody else had long since been asleep, and I was now under my covers as I always did when I knew I was going to hear the knocks. Laying there under the covers, I heard 3 loud knocks on the patio window. These were more like someone banging on the windows as opposed to the knocks I was familiar with. This was actually the first time I was able to hear the knock on the patio window from my bedroom. A few seconds later I heard the same 3 bangs on our bedroom window, and then a few seconds I could hear the same bangs on my parents window. This was also the only time I was able to hear the knocks on my parents window from my bedroom. Needless to say, this was by far the scariest of any of the encounters.
In 1977 we moved to a house in Lincoln and the knocks didn't follow.
I have told this story to many of my friends and they all say I was making up the story, or else I just thought there were knocks, or else it must have been some kids playing around.
I am definitely not making the story up, I can clearly recall at least one instance where each member of my family also heard the knocks, and our apartment was on the second floor. The window to the two bedrooms was about 12 feet above the ground, and the patio window was enclosed behind a porch railing and was about 15 feet up.
I went back to Lincoln 3 years ago (I live in Tulsa now) and drove by my old apartments. Aside from the deteriorating state of them, they looked basically the same. I am not sure of the exact apt. number, but if anybody in Lincoln would like to know which unit it was feel free to drop me some e-mail and I can create a little text map showing the location.
So what do you think?
